FAQ for Grill grates

Which grill grate is better – stainless steel, cast iron or chrome-plated?

The choice largely depends on how you grill. However, for most grillers, a solid stainless steel grill grate is the most practical and durable solution in the long run.

Stainless steel

  • rust-resistant
  • easy to maintain
  • very durable
  • ready to use immediately without seasoning

Cast iron

  • very high heat retention
  • perfect sear marks possible
  • requires regular care and oiling
  • can rust

Chrome-plated grill grates

  • inexpensive to purchase
  • short lifespan
  • coating wears off over time
  • can be potentially unsafe if the coating is damaged

If you grill regularly and want minimal maintenance, a solid stainless steel grill grate is the best long-term choice.

At Grillrost.com, we have been developing and manufacturing solid grill grates made of food-grade stainless steel for over 10 years. Thousands of grates are already in daily use. Customer feedback highlights three key advantages:

Is a stainless steel grill grate worth it as a replacement for gas grills like Weber, Napoleon or Broil King?

A solid stainless steel grill grate is often more worthwhile than buying a new grill.
Many standard grates are relatively thin and lose noticeable heat as soon as food is placed on them. A high-quality replacement grate made of solid stainless steel stores more heat and delivers much more consistent results.

  • better crust
  • more even cooking
  • less sticking
  • more relaxed grilling

With a solid grate, the grill works more steadily and is easier to control. That’s why the grill grate is one of the components that most strongly influences grilling results.

At the same time, a high-quality replacement grate is significantly cheaper than a completely new grill. In practice, the grill often feels almost like new again – heat performance is restored and grilling becomes noticeably more enjoyable.

How do I measure my grill correctly for a suitable replacement grate?

For a suitable replacement grill grate, the internal dimensions of the grill are what matter.
Measure the clear internal width and depth of the support ledge – not the old grate itself.

Important when measuring:

  • remove the old grate
  • measure the inner support area
  • check multiple measuring points
  • measure as precisely as possible (to the millimeter)

The old grate is often warped or intentionally made slightly smaller. If you only measure the old grate, you may quickly get incorrect dimensions.

Our grill grates are manufactured with high precision. As with any metal production, there is a minimal tolerance. In addition, stainless steel expands slightly at high temperatures.

Therefore, we recommend:

  • allowing about 4 mm total clearance
  • not measuring too tightly edge to edge
  • leaving some room for expansion

This ensures the grate sits securely in the grill, can be easily inserted and removed, and remains stable even at high temperatures.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a stainless steel grill grate?

Stainless steel grill grates are the most low-maintenance and durable solution for most grillers.
They combine everyday practicality with a long lifespan and are especially easy to use.

Advantages of stainless steel

  • rust-resistant
  • food-safe
  • very durable
  • no seasoning required
  • easy to clean
  • neutral taste

Possible disadvantages

  • stores slightly less heat than cast iron
  • sear marks are a bit more subtle – with thicker bars they become much stronger

In daily use, the advantages clearly outweigh the drawbacks for most grillers: less maintenance, long durability and easy grilling.

Which stainless steel is suitable for a grill grate?

For high-quality grill grates, food-grade, rust-resistant stainless steel should be used.
In particular, stainless steel 1.4301 (V2A) has proven itself.

What matters:

  • heat-resistant
  • corrosion-resistant
  • neutral taste
  • stable under temperature changes

1.4301 offers an excellent balance of durability, price and everyday usability when grilling.

More expensive stainless steels such as 1.4404 (V4A) are usually not necessary for normal grilling. Cheaper variants like AISI 201, on the other hand, can show corrosion more quickly. The lower quality is often not immediately visible but becomes noticeable in daily use.

That is why Grillrost.com uses solid stainless steel 1.4301, which has proven itself for many years in daily grilling – without any coating and without seasoning.

What rod thickness should a grill grate have and how does it affect grilling performance?

Rod thickness influences the grilling result more than many people think.
The thicker the rod, the more heat is stored in the material and the more pronounced the sear marks.

Thin grill grates

  • cool down faster
  • food sticks more easily
  • develop weaker roasting flavors

Solid grill grates

  • better heat retention
  • stronger sear marks
  • more even grilling

Recommendation for stability:

  • from 350 mm grate depth at least 5 mm rods
  • from 500 mm grate depth at least 6 mm rods

With greater rod thickness, grilling results become more consistent, stable and high-quality – especially noticeable when grilling frequently.

What diameter should my round grill grate have?

For swivel grills, round grill grates with a diameter between 60 cm and 100 cm are recommended.
The ideal size depends on the number of guests and especially on the size of your fire bowl.

A particularly versatile all-rounder is a round grill grate with an 80 cm diameter. It offers enough space for larger groups while still providing an outer zone to keep food warm indirectly.

Why 80 cm is often the best choice:

  • plenty of space for meat, sausages and side dishes
  • good balance between direct and indirect heat
  • ideal for private BBQs and larger gatherings

Pro tip: Choose the grill grate slightly larger than the fire bowl.

  • the grate extends beyond the direct heat zone
  • a cooler warming zone forms at the edge
  • full heat is concentrated in the center

It is important to always keep the dimensions of the fire bowl and grill frame in mind, so everything remains stable and the grate can swing freely.

Our round stainless steel grill grates are handmade and perfectly match our tripod, the grill crane and our ventilated fire bowls.

Handcrafted quality from our workshop:

  • solid frame made of 20 x 4 mm stainless steel flat bar
  • 5 mm stainless steel rods, individually hand-welded
  • for larger diameters, additional 8 mm support rods for maximum stability
  • optional custom engraving
How does grilling on a stainless steel grill grate compare to cast iron?

Stainless steel and cast iron grill noticeably differently.
Cast iron releases a lot of heat very quickly and reacts strongly to temperature fluctuations. This creates fast sear marks, but usually requires more attention while grilling.

Stainless steel grills more evenly and controlled:

  • more even heat distribution
  • less burning
  • more relaxed grilling
  • better for multiple batches in a row

Especially with larger cuts of meat or when turning food frequently, stainless steel often delivers more consistent results. Many users quickly notice after switching: stainless steel is easier to grill with and more forgiving.

Can you get good sear marks with stainless steel, or does meat burn faster?

A solid stainless steel grill grate creates clear grill marks without unnecessarily burning the meat.
What matters most for strong sear marks is the rod thickness – not just the material itself.

Sear marks are created by heat. A thick stainless steel grate also reaches high surface temperatures, but releases the heat in a more controlled way than cast iron.

What this means in practice:

  • clean grill marks
  • significantly stronger sear marks with thicker rods
  • fewer bitter flavors
  • juicier meat
Does a stainless steel grill grate need to be seasoned?

A stainless steel grill grate does not need to be seasoned.
Stainless steel is ready to use immediately and does not require any additional protective layer.

Seasoning is mainly necessary for cast iron to prevent rust. With stainless steel, you can simply heat it up slowly and evenly and start grilling right away.

How do you properly clean a stainless steel grill grate, can it go in the dishwasher and which brush is suitable?

A stainless steel grill grate is best cleaned while still hot.
In most cases, just a few simple steps are enough to make it clean and ready to use again.

The easiest way:

  • heat up the grill grate
  • brush or scrape off residues
  • done

Suitable tools:

Using a dishwasher is generally possible, but in practice usually unnecessary. Direct heat cleans faster and often more thoroughly.

Dish soap or cleaning agents can be used without any problem on stainless steel. Unlike cast iron, there is no patina or coating that could be damaged.

Does a stainless steel grill grate need to be oiled?

A stainless steel grill grate does not need to be oiled.
Oiling is mainly used to protect cast iron from rust. Stainless steel does not require a protective film.

Optionally, a light coating of oil can help reduce sticking slightly. However, it is not necessary.

Why is stainless steel more durable than chrome-plated grill grates?

Stainless steel is significantly more durable than chrome-plated grill grates.
Chrome-plated grates only have a thin protective layer. Once this layer is damaged or worn, corrosion often begins.

The key difference:

  • chrome-plated grates can chip
  • they can rust underneath the coating
  • stainless steel is made entirely of rust-resistant material

A high-quality stainless steel grill grate can therefore often last a lifetime of grilling.

Does a stainless steel grill grate warp under high heat?

Does a stainless steel grill grate warp under high heat?
A solid stainless steel grate remains dimensionally stable and does not warp.

With the premium grill grate, the grate rods are mounted so they can rotate. This allows the grate to expand axially when heated without building up stress in the material.

This keeps the grill grate permanently stable and flat even at very high temperatures.

Can a stainless steel grill grate rust?

Can a stainless steel grill grate rust?
No, real stainless steel cannot rust.

Surface discoloration is usually caused by:

  • surface rust
  • salt residue
  • foreign metal particles

These can be easily brushed off or burned off and are not material damage.
