A fire plate is ideal for barbecuing in a group, as everyone can grill their own dish and not just one barbecue master standing in front of the grill while the others are left with the role of spectator. It is therefore also ideal for dishes such as burgers.
The fire plates have a hole in the centre into which various inserts fit, such as the stainless steel wok attachment or the stainless steel grill insert for great roasting marks on steaks. This makes the griddle even more versatile than it already is.
Playing with the temperature zones
The fire in the centre of the grill creates different temperature zones on the plate. It gets less and less hot from the inside to the outside. This allows you to grill the meat on the inner edge of the plate with great roasting flavours, while the side dishes cook slowly on the outside without burning. With these different temperature zones, you can easily prepare a complex recipe with several ingredients, such as great burgers, completely on the griddle. It's not without reason that hot plates have been the barbecue trend for some time now and are a must-have for anyone who loves barbecuing in 2019.
The 57 fire plate presented here is made of steel, has a thickness of 4 mm and is also available in many different sizes. You always need a base for it. As not everyone has the space at home for an 80 cm or even 100 cm fire plate with the corresponding base (e.g. a fire barrel), there is the Grillrost.com fire plate for the kettle barbecue. The fire plate for kettle barbecues is available for all Weber (47, 57 and 67 models) and Rösle (50 and 60 models) kettle barbecues. These fire plates fit perfectly and transform a kettle barbecue into a base for a fire plate in no time at all.
Using the fire plate for the first time
Using a fire plate is really child's play. Place the fire plate on the barbecue, light a wood fire in the centre of the kettle barbecue so that the flames blaze nicely from the central opening (please make sure that the flames do not blaze too high). In addition to a wood fire, you can of course also work with charcoal and briquettes, but then you do without the visible flames.
Now that you have lit a fire for the first time, you can burn in the fire plate. We have found that burning in is not always necessary. If you have a few guests for your first barbecue and the griddle gets full, it is sufficient to cover the griddle with the food to burn it in.
Burning in the hot plate
We explain how to burn in the griddle:
You will need a high-heat vegetable oil (for example rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil). Heat the kettle grill to a high heat, place the plate on top and rub it well with the oil using some kitchen paper or a silicone brush. Repeat this procedure several times and always make sure that the fire is blazing nicely. After approx. After 1-1.5 hours, the plate should have a black coating, which is called patina. This patina protects the griddle from rust.
Caution: How to burn in a grid dle is always a hotly debated topic among hard-headed barbecuers. Some time ago, burning in with potatoes was still the standard. Nowadays, this method is usually no longer used. This is because the potatoes burn completely with this searing method and are then thrown away. This is why oil is now usually the only method used - and it works just as well!
The alternative to baking
We skipped this step as we almost completely covered the griddle with the ingredients for our burgers. But before using it for the first time, we rubbed the plate with a sponge and hot water to remove any dirt and production residues. We then let the briquettes burn through and inserted the plate into the kettle grill after heating. In the next step, we rubbed it with rapeseed oil and then, after spreading it with kitchen paper, started to coat the plate straight away.
